Distributor: Polyphony Digital
Designer: Kazunori Yamauchi
Release Date: October 2007
Genre: Racing
Platform: PlayStation 3

Overview:
The trailers show various features that will be included in the game; including pit crews, astonishing lighting and shadow effects, and a possible new track set in London. New cars were featured such as the Ferrari F430, Audi R8, and Nissan GT-R Proto along with those that have all featured in the series before. It is still unknown whether it will be a PlayStation Store download or actually released on a Blu-ray Disc.

At the PlayStation Première 2007, Kazunori Yamauchi, head of Polyphony Digital, demonstrated the game; showing off it's advanced online features such as an online event calendar and profile editor. Up to 16 cars could race at once and the AI was improved from previous Gran Turismo games, although, damage was not shown.

Recently, Famitsu magazine featured an interview with Kazonuri Yamauchi, in which the new, extremely detailed in-car view feature was explained. It includes functioning speedometers and odometers and reflecting rear-view mirrors and wing mirrors. Players driving with a supported steering wheel, will have the ability to look left and right in the cockpit of the car by using the D-pad. The engine also sounds different when the in-car view is used.

The game has a totally new interface, called My Page. It acts as the players' personalized menu for the game. The icons include; Race, Garage, TV, Album, Option, Profile, Home, and Calendar. Some of these icons are self-explanatory, and others haven't had details released on them yet. The Calendar icon opens up a calendar with upcoming race events marked on it, a world map with the player's play area marked in red, weather read-outs, and a clock. When the game starts up, the player is taken straight to the 'My Page' area.

The game will not only recreate the players' garage, but also the whole area of residence. When the player turns off the icons on the My Page interface, pictures are shown of the area, such as buildings, interiors of buildings, and other scenery.

The Home icon refers to Sony's 3D virtual chat space, Home. The plan at the moment is to create a Gran Turismo universe in Home. Players will be able to jump in and out of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and back into Home as often as they wish. To coincide with this, Polyphony hope to add some sort of friends list and other social network features to the game. During online races players will have two options; play with voice chat on, or play with it off. Polyphony have clearly researched online chat and gaming and how they can co-exist in a game.

Offline, the gameplay is totally different to Gran Turismo 4 Prologue in all aspects. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will not be a series of liscence tests, but will instead be more of a classic Gran Turismo experience. You can earn money from racing, with each race offering a different prize; usually a car and a trophy. The money can be used to buy cars from car dealers in the game. Car tuning is very unlikely to be featured in the game, but should appear in Gran Turismo 5. The game will include around 40 cars, and 4 courses with 8 layouts, including certain locations that have never been seen before in a GT game.

The game will run at 1080p, 60fps, just like Gran Turismo HD. The game uses a technique called High Dynamic Range Lighting to produce its lighting and shadow effects. Up to 16 cars will race on a track once, offline and around 12 online. These numbers haven't been finalized, but Polyphony hope that they can achieve this. In the interview, Yamauchi said that he would like to bring back the B-Spec mode from Gran Turismo 4 and incorperate it into Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is expected to be released worldwide in October 2007.
